Many young people don’t know how to study efficiently and effectively. By knowing how to study students maximize their time, improve their learning and also reduce stress. Research indicates that successful students follow smart study habits to maximize their effectiveness.
Here are eight smart study habits you can help your secondary school student develop at home:
1. Listen carefully when assignments are given at school. Your student should be aware of what each assignment requires and what teachers expect. Careful listening is an often-neglected study skill.
2. Study at a suitable time. Students need to set aside regular time within their most productive hours.
3. Choose a study area free from distractions. Studying smart requires concentration so encourage your student to eliminate distractions such as telephones, television and loud music.
4. Review the day’s work. This enables a student to recall what was done and plan ahead.
5. Allot time for each task. Set aside short periods for study that require your young person to concentrate better and reduce the chance of boredom.
6. Complete one assignment or task at a time. It helps sometimes if a student completes easier tasks first that will allow time for the harder ones. This also helps prevent the feeling of being overwhelmed with work.

You are a proud parent of a happy and healthy 2 week old baby. You and your spouse have both now gotten into a routine that is comfortable concerning nightly feedings, changing and enjoying your new little one. Your life seems perfect.
Then all that changes as your baby begins to cry uncontrollably and you can not find a reason. He will not take a bottle, he doesn’t need a diaper change, he is not running a fever, but he will not stop crying. What could be wrong? The answer more than likely is colic.
All babies cry, but babies with colic cry more than usual for their age and this usually happens around the same time each day. This does not mean they will cry each and every day. Remember, colic and its causes are still a mystery.
The symptoms are basically the same for any baby with colic and is if your baby starts suddenly fussing and crying without any known reason which last more than three hours a day, for more than three days a week, and for more than three weeks. Your baby’s face may turn red and the area around his mouth may even appear pale. His stomach or abdomen area can be swollen and hard. Most infants with colic curl up in a ball and make fists with their hands. The colic episode may end when your little one is exhausted and falls to sleep.
No commentsThe last decade has seen heightened interest in and awareness of the issues surrounding boys in most of the western world. It is common knowledge that boys lead the way in all the wrong statistics, including; problematic behaviours, learning difficulties and health problems. Educators and professionals around the world are looking for ways to cater for and engage young males.
Approval and high regard lie at the heart of raising happy, well-adjusted boys. Boys are approval-seeking creatures. They craved to be liked, loved and appreciated ? particularly by their mothers and other significant women in their lives. They also want approval from their fathers, which can be a tough ask.
Yes, boy’s behaviour are often in your face and direct. Subtle, boys are not. But at least you know where you stand with boys.
Yes, they can be dirty, scruffy and smelly but scratch the surface and you will reveal a gem underneath.
Yes, they are often more boisterous and active than girls but don’t mistake boisterousness with aggression. Provide them with the space to be active and give them ways to channel their energy in productive ways.
No commentsEver blown your top to your children, only to regret it ten minutes later?
Silly question, it happens to us all no matter how well-behaved our kids or placid and patient we are. At times the general strains and stresses of life wear us down so our emotional responses don’t match children’s behaviours. Or rather, their less than perfect behaviour doesn’t warrant the ’screaming banshee’ response that you have provided.
So what do you do if you have blown your top and given your children an absolute verbal blast with steam coming out of both your ears?
First, check that your rare outburst of anger is just that ? rare. If you are always angry or over-reacting then this is a fair sign that all is not right with you. I don’t want to state the bleeding obvious, but constant sudden outbursts of anger are a sign that all is not right with the world. It may mean taking a break, getting some additional help with your kids or even getting some professional counselling to sort out internal or relationship issues.
No commentsFirst and foremost I want to start by emphasizing that it can take quite a while to get rid of discoloration! It can take months to years! You will have to be patient and consistent!
Ingredients that will help fade spots include Vitamin A, Kinetin, AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acids), Azelic Acid, Kojic Acid, Vitamin C, Mulberry Extracts, Saxifrage Extracts, Algae, Licorice Root and so on…. and of course Hydroquinone (a synthetic skin lightening ingredient)available in strength of 2% OR 4% . Each ingredient has its strengths and weaknesses. The most widely used and frequently prescribed ingredient is hydroquinone though contreversial. Hydroquinone is stronger than ingredients such as vitamin C and the ones listed above so works quicker. Hydroquinone is a more agressive and fastest way to treat discoloration and for some too strong so alternative products (above) may be for you. Do not abuse or overuse hydroquinone because it can eventually lead to skin lightening called hypopigmentation.(white spots) . If you chose hydroquinone, limit its use to four to six months and stop using the product once the desired result is achieved, making sure to use sunscreen when you are outside or they will return.
No commentsLet’s face it: raising children can be quite the adventure. Rewarding at one turn, challenging at the next ? it’s the ultimate roller-coaster for the parenting thrill seeker. In the Game of Life, you rolled the dice and accepted the role of co-parent. While the rules seem deceptively simple, (raise child into healthy adult), the game is often complicated by differences in parenting styles between partners. It’s these differences, if unresolved, that can abandon you in the land of defeat and leave you feeling overwhelmed and discouraged, with "game over" flashing on your internal video screen.
Bridging a significant difference in parenting styles is one of the most difficult aspects of building a family. Parenting is the substantial task of balancing your beliefs and values (about child development, love, tradition and discipline) with your childhood experiences, in order to nurture healthy and secure children. Add a co-parent to the equation ? with their own beliefs, values and experiences - and suddenly, the balancing act becomes more complex.
No commentsHow to Remove Blackheads
by: Brenda H. Murphy
The bane of most teenagers existence is pimples. But they may also have another skin problem that will stay with them past the hormonal years, and that’s blackheads. These are something that can follow a person for much of their life, because they are related to two common factors of everyday life: oil production in your skin, and dead skin cells.
Contrary to popular belief, blackheads are not the result of dirt accumulating in overly deep pores. The “black” part arises from a combination of dead skin cells and sebum, or oil, although it is actually the skin particles that cause the color.
Unlike pimples, which can be a bacterial infection that turns the skin red and fills a pocket with pus, blackheads are flat spots that have filled with the cells that our skin sheds on a daily basis, and oil from the sebaceous glands. But people will treat them the same as pimples and try to squeeze or pop them to remove the unsightly mark. This is the last thing you should do, as it irritates the skin, and can start an infection under the plug of dirt and oil.
No commentsThe citizens of the early Roman Republic enjoyed an education system similar to ancient Athens. It was voluntary and parents paid tutors or schools directly. There was very little government interference, so a vibrant education free market of tutors, schools, and apprenticeships developed.
One aspect of Roman society that compromised their education system was that Roman parents wanted their children to learn knowledge that only Greek teachers could provide. However, most Greeks in Rome at the time were slaves.
As a result, the Greek teachers could not personally or financially benefit by their work. Often their morale was low and they were subject to harsh discipline. Unlike the free teachers in ancient Athens, Greek slave-teachers in Rome had little incentive to innovate or continually improve their skills. As a result, the quality of education stagnated.
Also, a majority of the Roman population was slaves, both from Greece and other areas Rome had conquered. Naturally, these slaves had no rights and no control over their children’s education.

No commentsLast night Tom’s daughter, Sue, came out of her room to see her dad and said, "I got another one of those instant messages. It says, ‘tomorrow you had better not show up at school or else’." She has been getting messages like this now for weeks. The result of this is that she no longer likes to turn her computer on.
Sue is now 14 years-old and in the 8th grade. She has been bullied at school for a number of years and they have had a difficult time getting the Principal and teachers to put a stop to it. Sue has two disadvantages that make her a target. First, she has always had a weight problem, not extremely heavy but just a little over weight. Second, her last name is hard to pronounce. This has led to numerous ways to say and spell her name. They have been very creative and cruel. Tom is aware that she needs to lose about 20 pounds but what can he do about his name, change it?
This should come as no surprise to anyone, but as technology changes we all adjust; unfortunately, so do the bullies. Bullying has gone wireless. These are situations our children face that we never did.
